Caps Goalie Braden Holtby: Things to Do in Old Town Alexandria

2018 Stanley Cup-winning goaltender Braden Holtby is a hero on the ice. When he’s not defending the net for the Washington Capitals, the three-time NHL All-Star is spending time with his wife and two kids who call Old Town Alexandria home. Here, the Canadian-born family man and hockey star shares his go-to Alexandria restaurants, an ideal day with the family and the annual Old Town event his family never misses.

What I like about living in Old Town

We like the family atmosphere, obviously the history and the walkability of everything. The restaurants are great, and the people are great.

A perfect day with the family

Go to South Block in the morning and then come back and hang out or go for a swim if it’s summer. Then we go for dinner on King Street and walk to get ice cream at Pop’s Old Fashioned Ice Cream.

Favorite Restaurants

There’s a ton. We go to Ichiban for sushi. Columbia Firehouse, Mia’s Italian Kitchen and Vola’s Dockside Grill are at the top of the list.

Go-To Spots for Drinks

I like going to Virtue Feed & Grain, Hank’s Oyster Bar or Hank’s Pasta Bar. There’s a lot of good places for drinks in the area.

Where to Go in the Region

We don’t venture too far from Old Town very often, but if we do we usually go to Farmers Fishers Bakers in Georgetown. We go down there and walk around. But we mainly stay in Old Town.

Life Here Compared to Canada

It’s vastly different, but I like Old Town because the people are similar. Very friendly and it’s got a small town feel to it. We’re glad to be able to call both places home.

Favorite Events

The main one we go to is the King Street Art Festival. We try to get there every year because everything else is during hockey season. For Halloween we try to take the kids to Lee Street.
