City skylines, water reflecting the early evening sun, picturesque sailboats filling the harbor—is this real life? Yes indeed. The Old Town waterfront combines natural beauty with the classically romantic seascape for that starry-eyed shoot you want.

This picturesque cobblestone block in Old Town is known throughout the DC area as a swoon-worthy spot, framed by historic rowhouses and the leafy boughs of mature trees. Before you go, make sure you’re prepared to be swept off your feet (and don’t forget to wear heels that can handle the cobblestones…).

3. Historic character

Throughout Old Town you’ll find the hallmarks of our historic character, from gas lanterns to climbing ivy and wrought-iron gates, not to mention flowers in bloom if you’re here in the spring. Some great photo-ready sites include the historic brick wall lining portions of Prince Street, the exposed brick façade at Virtue Feed & Grain (once an 18th century warehouse), and the garden at the Alexandria Visitors Center.

4. Colorful doors

Tap into Old Town’s playful spirit with photographs in front of historic homes with vibrantly colored doors. From bright red hues to soft blues, these whimsical doorways make a perfect frame within the image and hint at the new phase you’re about to embark on (this photo is from Carlyle House).

5. King Street

For a lively urban feel, look no further than the heart of Old Town on King Street, where embellished storefronts, red brick sidewalks and outdoor seating play host to a constant flow of pedestrians (and cute pups to boot).  Plus the 18th and 19th century building architecture anchors this bustling corridor in history.

6. Wilkes Street Tunnel

Just four blocks south of King Street, Alexandria has its own “Tunnel of Love.” The Wilkes Street Tunnel was originally constructed to support commerce between Alexandria and Richmond and is one of only two remaining 19th century railroad structures in this city. Find the ivy-covered sandstone entrance at the corner of Wilkes and South Royal streets for a beautifully framed shoot.

7. Historic alleyways

Old Town’s historic alleyways are like secret passages to the past. Decked with cobblestone and lined with brick walls, these intimate back streets tucked between historic buildings are your go-to spot if you want a timeless but unmistakably Alexandria image. Find two great options in the 100 block of S. Lee Street.

8. Carlyle House Garden

The 18th-century style garden at Carlyle House offers a lush oasis in the middle of Old Town, complete with crape myrtles, benches, classic boxwood parterres and a cutting garden. Prepare to be inspired by the garden’s romantic vintage feel—you might even decide to get married here!

9. Bright walls

Painted walls or murals are perfect for more lighthearted pics, especially if you want to show your fun side. Head to Big Wheel Bikes near the Old Town waterfront for a fun bright yellow backdrop, or check out the murals along Mount Vernon Avenue in Del Ray for a colorful twist on the classic shoot.

Other spots not pictured that would make great engagement session locations: waterfront parks, Alexandria Farmers Markets, and local favorites like Misha’s or Pop’s Old Fashioned Ice Cream.
