The Turkish Coffee Lady

Gizem Salcigil White did not know who she wanted to become, but she always seemed to approach the future with openness and ambition. Like many young people starting their careers, she wrestled with finding her true passion. Her family’s background in architecture had her convinced that graphic design was her future.
Life had had other plans, guiding her to create one of Alexandria’s most inviting cultural experiences: The Turkish Coffee Lady. Here, every cup of coffee is an invitation to discover through gastrodiplomacy, a method of promoting tourism through food. Guests savor coffee readings, indulge in baklava, and marvel at intricate micro-artwork. This is not just a coffee shop. It is a vibrant gateway into the heart of Turkish culture.

It all started when Gizem was a student at Emerson College in Boston, Massachusetts, studying global marketing, when she was suddenly asked the strangest question: “I remember somebody asking me where Turkey was in Massachusetts…” She began to wonder how to expand people’s knowledge of her cultural background. The moment quickly inspired a deep interest in nation branding and cultural diplomacy. So, she spent much of her early career working in the industry, from working for Turkish Airlines to managing strategies for the American Turkish Association of Washington, D.C., Gizem built an impressive background, but she always felt as though she was missing something. “You can’t just go around one by one and explain where Turkey is. There are over 1,000 years of history. You need some sort of communication tool. That became Turkish coffee.”
Inspired by the integral role that coffee has in the daily lives of Americans, Gizem sought to showcase 500-year-old Turkish coffee traditions. After seeing food trucks in D.C., she launched the Mobile Turkish Coffee Truck, which quickly became an award-winning cultural diplomacy initiative that toured the world, showcasing Turkish culture and bringing it to visitors across Northern Virginia.
Things came to a halt when Gizem was faced with a series of life-changing moments, such as a difficult cancer diagnosis and the 2020 pandemic. It was a difficult moment, but after the birth of her baby girl, she needed to support her family and searched for opportunities to expand the coffee business. “As I was searching for a home for my Turkish cultural house concept, a close friend and realtor, Eva Nihal, introduced me to a space on King Street. The moment I saw it, I fell in love with it. It felt like my dream shop. That’s how Turkish Coffee Lady found its home in Alexandria five years ago, and it’s been growing ever since.”
Today, The Turkish Coffee Lady is nestled along Alexandria’s King Street mile and stands as one of the city’s most immersive, widely beloved, and welcoming spaces, exuding a celebration of culture and life. Wander inside, and you’ll find an elaborate display of art exuded throughout not only the room, but also down to the coffee experience. Cozy round tables are splashed with colorful mosaic tiling. Small but mighty coffee is carefully prepared in espresso-style cups and beautifully presented on elaborate golden trays. A tiny golden cone reveals a delicious bite of Turkish delight.
From world-renowned artist Hasan Kale’s jaw-dropping micro-art, the home spans. Cleverly nicknamed “Microangelo”, his remarkable micro paintings are on display inside and painted on ordinary items like coffee beans, popcorn, sesame seeds, rice grains, and so much more. Expert coffee readings are also available. “I want every guest to feel special, as if they’ve stepped into Istanbul in the heart of Old Town. From the micro art and cozy ambiance to the aromas and flavors, it’s about creating a sensory journey that brings joy and inspiration through all five senses.”
Superior hospitality is apparent the minute you sit down. Although busy behind the scenes, Gizem and her expert staff welcome you and are attentive to each guest’s needs. They believe having coffee at The Turkish Coffee Lady is more than just a caffeine boost; it’s an experience that encourages you to slow down, reconnect with yourself, and engage with Turkish culture.
“Alexandria is a beautiful mosaic where cultures, history, and community come together. Despite its diversity, I noticed that Turkish cuisine and coffee culture were missing. With Turkish Coffee Lady, we’re filling that gap by offering both authentic coffee traditions and gastronomy. It’s especially meaningful to be part of a city that values cultural heritage while also being such an important place in American history.”
Celebrate 5 years of The Turkish Coffee Lady at the Micro Art exhibition by Hasan Kale on display until July 31, 2026.
