Old Town’s The B.E.S.T. Gift Shop spells out its mission right in its name. B.E.S.T. stands for “Building Employment Solutions Together,” which perfectly captures the goal of this nonprofit organization, which provides sustainable employment and therapeutic opportunities for adults with disabilities. What makes this shop stand out from the rest is that it offers adults with disabilities an opportunity to share their creative talents in a wondrous space. “Each customer that comes through our doors will feel the energy, passion, and positivity of the artists that create the items sold,” says Joel Pace, Senior Program Manager of the B.E.S.T. Gift Shop, and longtime Muay Thai professional for over 12 years.

Wander inside the shop and explore a range of unique, handmade, and personalized items created by artisans with disabilities, who receive 100% of each sale. Peruse stunning original paintings, hand-woven bags, scented candles suited for any space, glittering jewelry perfect for gift-giving, and so much more. “Walking into the B.E.S.T. Gift Shop is also a unique experience due to the fact that you’re most likely to see the people creating the products sold, while you shop. Our Alexandria Arts & Abilities program is in the back of the shop, which can be viewed through a set of glass doors,” said Joel.

This unique experience is also powered by several organizations that share a commitment to supporting talented artists. The store is owned and operated by ServiceSource, Inc., which supports people with disabilities, their families, caregivers, and community members. Their partnership with the Alexandria Arts & Abilities program, in coordination with the Joey Pizzano Memorial Fund, helps bring the space to life. “Each specific item is directly attached to the artisan who created it, and they receive 100% of the proceeds when their item is sold…We are truly here to support our talented artists and give them the platform they deserve,” says Joel.

That commitment to creating a platform where people feel seen comes to life along King Street, with a bright red storefront that lets you peek in and see the artists creating in real time. “Having the B.E.S.T. Gift Shop in the heart of Old Town is incredible, due to the variety of residents and visitors that come through on a daily basis. We get to meet people from all walks of life, hear their stories, and share our own. It’s truly a community in which the people we support feel like a fully integrated member, and ultimately thrive as a result,” shares Joel. The B.E.S.T. Gift Shop is truly a beacon of positivity, radiating right in the heart of Alexandria.
