Fantastical Glass

Artist Alison Sigethy smiling inside her Torpedo Factory Art Center glass studio.

Stepping into Alison Sigethy’s whimsical art studio Fantastical Glass (#335) at the Torpedo Factory Art Center is like peeking inside her imagination. Her enchanting kinetic glass sculptures, known as Sea Cores, surround each corner, inviting you to journey underwater. Take a closer look and watch as soft as bubbles travel upward through intricately placed colored glass, reminding visitors of coral reefs, sea life, and underwater creatures.

Alison’s enthusiasm for the ocean extends beyond the studio. In 2006, Alison was the first international woman to compete in nine events at the Greenland National Kayak Championship, earning her eight awards. Not only is she a profound artist, but she is a fierce competitor. Her natural affinity for being and moving in water inspires a love for kinetic art. As a child she was inspired by Robert Breer’s captivating floating sculptures and his ability to bring life to art. It was not until she enrolled in a glassmaking class in 2002 that she was motivated to begin making glass art in her kitchen with a small kiln. She felt inspired to make larger pieces and searched for spaces where she could expand her dreams.

She eventually found her way to Alexandria’s Torpedo Factory Art Center, a former World War II munitions factory converted into 82 artist studios, ten galleries, and 150 juried artists. Her whimsical sculptures called Sea Cores have become a memorable part of the factory ever since.

Alison appreciates the public nature of the arts center, “By having a studio in a very public art center, people can see my art without my having to travel or do shows…” The space allows her to focus on tailoring each piece to her clients’ needs. Visitors can even book group tours with Alison to get a closer look at the expert craftsmanship that goes into constructing her glass sculptures. Alison’s art studio fuels imagination and inspires a sense of serenity.
