Alexandria History Tours

Owner and founder of Alexandria History Tours, Tim Rose.

Strolling through Old Town and into charming shops and lively restaurants, you might notice glimpses of the city’s layered past woven into its surroundings. Star-shaped iron bars cling to historic buildings, and plaques about founding fathers like George Washington appear near the places they once visited. Alexandria History Tours shares the hidden stories of the people and events that shaped the city through vibrant walking tours, each one an adventure that invites you to slow down and connect with others in a whole new way.

It all began when Tim Rose, owner and founder of Alexandria History Tours, moved to the city in 2021 with his wife. “I think the move really unlocked my own historic interest and imagination. I thought, ‘oh wow,’ there’s a lot here that ties back to my early childhood interests in military history, the history of the colonial period, and you can see a lot of it visually.” Tim is so knowledgeable about Alexandria’s history that you’d never guess running a history-focused tour company wasn’t his original career. “Professionally, I was in the Marine Corps, which was a big part of my life, the service for eight years active, two and a half year in the reserves, and then I worked in investment banking, during the pandemic. I was still working remote for the bank based out of New York, and basically just started exploring the area [Alexandria]. Restless with that banking job, I was looking for a little bit more of a meaningful professional endeavor,” shares Tim candidly.

Tim recalled several memories when reflecting on what led to the creation of the tour company. He shared how growing up in Richmond around Revolutionary War and Civil War history helped shape an interest in history at a young age. He explained how a visit to Christ Church prompted him to reflect on historical leaders facing consequential choices, and on whether he should leave investment banking for work that felt more meaningful. “I’m sitting in a pew where George Washington and presidents sat. They’re all gone, literally history. And I’m wrestling with my own big life decision. Should I stay in my job? Life’s short,” Tim recalls. It was then that the idea to do something bold began to take shape. He thought back to a 2022 tour of the Normandy battlefields, where the guide’s passion had stayed with him, and with it, his own plans to start a company. Alexandria History Tours was born soon after.

Each walking tour begins at the welcoming Alexandria Visitors Center, then winds to the stately Carlyle House before heading to spots like Gadsby’s Tavern and the picturesque Captain’s Row along with many other beloved Alexandria locations. Inspired by the city’s historic connections to the Revolutionary War, George Washington, and the Civil War, the tours invite visitors to step into the city’s stories, explore its iconic landmarks, and discover its surprising connections to pivotal moments in American history.

Today, a walk with Alexandria History Tours is an invitation to step away from the screens and truly connect with others and the history around you. The tours have grown to cover a longer route with sharper attention to the small details and the historical markers that passersby may overlook. Tim sees Alexandria as much more than a quick stop on the way to Mount Vernon, it’s a city with its own vibrant community. “Alexandria is a perfect complement to Mount Vernon and I would really encourage people to explore both…Mount Vernon was George Washington’s home. While he lived there, Alexandria was his hometown. He had a vast network of friends in Alexandria,” says Tim. Each tour is a living, evolving experience, and for Tim it’s an opportunity to blend historical fact and captivating storytelling. “When I show up at the Visitor Center, I am excited to meet people and show them the history of Alexandria. It is fun and the time flies by. I put my whole energy into making sure people have a wonderful and memorable experience,” he says. Above all, Tim hopes guests leave with fond new memories, a sense of wonder, and stories to share at the dinner table.
