Getting to & Around Alexandria

Metro & Bus

Metrorail (operated by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority) is public transportation that can take you to Alexandria from Washington D.C., Maryland, and other parts of Northern Virginia like Arlington. The King St-Old Town Metrorail station is located on King Street, Alexandria’s main street for shopping, dining, and the arts. Both Yellow Line and Blue Line trains stop at the King St-Old Town station.

The King St-Old Town Metrorail station is only a 25-minute walk from the waterfront at the east end of King Street. You can also take the free King Street Trolley along the length of King Street, from the Metrorail station to wherever you need to go, and back.

In addition, the DASH bus is free. The 30 and 31 line drops off at Market Square, three blocks from Waterfront Park. Dash buses run as early as 6 a.m. and as late as midnight on both Friday and Saturday.

Parking

There are more than 15 parking garages throughout Old Town from the waterfront to the King Street Metro. Many garages and lots offer great rates such as a maximum of $5 after 5 p.m. on weekdays and weekends.

Find a map of all Old Town garages and lots on the City’s parking page or click here.

Throughout Old Town, visitors will find metered street parking for two- and three-hour limits. Parking meters in Old Town and Carlyle are free after 9 p.m., on Sundays and on state holidays.

TIP! Located centrally in Old Town by City Hall and the Alexandria Visitor Center, the Market Square Garage (108 N. Fairfax Street) is just $5 all day on Saturdays and Sundays, $5 weekdays after 5 p.m., and $2.50 per hour or $10 all day on weekdays before 5 p.m. Plus, parking in the garage is free during the Old Town Farmers’ Market each Saturday until noon.
