Within eyesight of Washington, D.C., on the Potomac River waterfront, Alexandria, Virginia, is highlighting open museums and things to do during the federal government shutdown. Find the most up-to-date information on D.C.’s status here. Across the river in Alexandria, we remain fully open for business with more than a dozen historic attractions and museumswalking tourswaterfront parks and events alongside shopping and dining. Plus, federal government employees and D.C.-area hotel guests can receive free Key to the City Attractions Passes at the Alexandria Visitor Center.

Visitors and locals are invited to explore Alexandria’s neighborhoods, including Old Town, the city’s nationally designated historic district.

Key to the City Passes

During the federal government shutdown, Washington, D.C.-area hotel guests and federal government employees can claim two free Alexandria Key to the City Attractions Passes (a $60+ value) at the Alexandria Visitor Center. Each pass includes admission to 9 historic sites, plus coupons for 40% off tickets to George Washington’s Mount Vernon, tall ship Providence, and City Cruises’ Potomac Water Taxi.

To claim your passes, visit the Alexandria Visitor Center (221 King Street) in person. Hotel guests must present a room key or digital reservation confirmation, and federal employees must show a valid government ID.

The Visitor Center is open 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., seven days a week, in October. For more information, call 703-838-5005.
