At the end of June 2021, Detroit-style pizza chain Emmy Squared opened in the former location of Pizzeria Paradiso, featuring a menu of red and white pizzas and decadent double-stack burgers and touting an upscale-dining environment.

Goodies Frozen Custard & Treats

In late May, Old Town’s latest retro-themed sweet spot started serving legendary Wisconsin-style frozen custard and nostalgic treats from Commerce Street’s historic Ice House from 12 to 6 p.m., Thursdays through Sundays.

One of Alexandria’s locally owned and beloved coffee shops opened its second location at 6 Prince St., near Alexandria’s waterfront, in early June, featuring a rooftop deck with Potomac River views plus beer and wine.

Old Hat Bar

New and highly anticipated gastropub Old Hat celebrated its grand opening in late June 2021. Well-known cocktail creator Jack Caminos and business partner Tim Prosser introduced a menu infused with Asian, Midwestern, Spanish, New York and Eastern European influences plus a bar menu that leans on Tiki influences.

In June, the 20-foot food truck specializing in Roman-style pizza from former Vermillion chef Tom Cardarelli opened its patio and parking lot picnic area for outdoor seating in Del Ray. In addition, the curbside pizzeria is now accepting walk-up and phone orders every night, plus offering a curated selection of beer, wine and coming-soon classic cocktails.

The DC region’s first dog-friendly bar, restaurant and dog park trio, which opened in fall 2020, completed a recent expansion and is now more than triple its original size. Bring your four-legged friend to Barkhaus’ upcoming events like bingo nights, trivia and more.

Intertribal Creatives

Launched as a pop-up gallery and market at Founder’s Hall in December 2020, this free and fair-trade gallery designed to showcase the artistic, creative and entrepreneurial spirit of Indigenous artists across North America celebrated its soft re-opening in late June. The gallery features an “Elder’s Spotlight,” highlighting the knowledge keepers in Native communities who were deeply impacted by the pandemic.

Potomac Paddle Club

In late May 2021, the DC region’s only 16-passenger pedal boat launched 2.5-hour cruises from Old Town to National Harbor, featuring ten cycle stations and a 6-foot paddle wheel. Cruises run two Fridays a month for $75 per person.
