As once home to the largest pre-Prohibition brewery in the south, Alexandria has heaps (and pints) of beer history, with sites of former breweries, museums featuring brewery artifacts and countless restaurants with craft brews on the menu dotting city streets. Plus, new this month, an Alexandria Historic Brewery Walking Tour & Pub Guide is hitting the streets to ensure you don’t miss a sip. So make the most of the last few days of Craft Beer Month (and remember in reality, every month is perfect for craft beer) with these hop-notch (get it?) brew experiences in Alexandria. As always, please drink responsibly!

Before Prohibition, the Robert Portner Brewing Company was the largest production brewery in the south, taking up an entire city block in Old Town Alexandria. In 2015, two of Robert Portner’s great-great granddaughters will revive the famous brewery with their own brewhouse, featuring original reconstructed beer recipes, German-American cuisine and an all-new Craft Beer Test Kitchen, which will allow budding brewers to make their beer concoctions on a larger scale and get personal feedback from Portner customers! Join the “Taste Test Team” to hear the latest updates and receive invites for pre-opening events.
