Sound & Movement | Local Motion Project

A smiling man in a colorful shirt and knitted cap plays percussion instruments on stage, holding a shaker. Three women sit in the background, watching and smiling. A microphone is set up nearby.

Step into a vibrant exploration of rhythm, movement, and connection in this interactive workshop led by renowned percussionist Tom Teasley and movement artist Sara Lavan, Artistic Director of Local Motion Project. Blending global grooves with improvisational dance, this session offers a collaborative journey that is both playful and deeply restorative.

Building on Tom’s Biorhythms: Interactive Rhythmic & Sound Attunement workshop series, this next chapter deepens the experience by integrating movement and music in real time. Sara will guide participants who want to engage in the movement portion through inclusive and gentle prompts, while Tom creates a dynamic live soundscape using world percussion and vocal percussion techniques—including Solkattu, traditional Middle Eastern rhythms, Afro-diasporic grooves, and American funk patterns—that lead and respond to the group organically.

Together, Tom and Sara cultivate a welcoming space for creative expression and community building. Whether you’re dancing, drumming, or simply moving in your own way, you’ll be part of an energetic dialogue between sound and motion.

No prior experience necessary—just curiosity and a willingness to explore.

Open to adults and teens interested in rhythm, creativity, and connection.
